I'm
from Edmonton-
the capital of the province of Alberta, Canada, and its largest city. It is
a great place to be in the summer because there festivals pretty much every
weekend and a wide variety of things to do. Its high latitude (53° north) and
interior location produce winters that are long, cold, and relatively dry. The
average daily temperature range in January is -17° C to -8° C, and the average
range in July is 15° C to 31° C.
Partly
because of the long, cold winters, and partly because of my desire to travel,
I began a career in teaching English overseas immediately after graduating with
a B.Ed. from the University
of Alberta. Since then I have worked in the Czech Republic, China, Macedonia,
Morocco, and now in the United Arab Emirates.
The
week before moving here was especially busy. I got married on August 12 to my
wife Tracey, and we left Edmonton on the 18 for Abu Dhabi. I am now teaching
English at the Higher
Colleges of Technology, and Tracey is teaching resource room at the American
Community School. As well as teaching English at HCT, I have also taken
on a position of web master for the Abu Dhabi Women's College online newspaper
the Corniche-Chronicle.
Check it our to see what's happening around the college.
Sadly, we weren't able to
bring our dog, Bailey along with us to Abu
Dhabi.
Living in a high-rise apartment in the middle of a large city with no parks
to run in would not have been much fun for him- especially with the summer temperatures
getting up to the 50° range. Luckily for him my sister Susen and my brother
in law Gary have been taking good care of him. We owe them a great deal of thanks!
